Puppy Housebreaking

There are basically two ways to potty train a new or seasoned pup so they do their thing where you want and not on that rug in the family room. Puppy housebreaking is not all that difficult if you follow one of two ways.  You can paper train them or you can use a crate train your dog.  Unless you can physically watch them all the time catching them each time and then rushing them outside to do their business, we recommend using one of the following methods.  Please note patience is required.

Puppy Housebreaking

Paper Training

This method of puppy housebreaking works well if being at home or going home throughout the day is more difficult or simply out of the question.  Puppy’s do just fine on their own as long as you take the necessary steps to protect your house and them.

First make sure you have a room or corner of a room, a smaller space works best, to wall off from anything you do not want the puppy to chew on or pee or poop on.  Make certain your new dog cannot get out of that space or you will come home to a really messy house.  Layer that space with newspaper.   He will chew them up play with them but don’t worry it’s natural for them to play with everything even their own excrement.

Every time they go it will be on paper, and eventually you will start to remove the paper little by little.  Duing this puppy housebreaking What you’re looking for is that he is consistently going on the paper if he misses put some paper back.  But eventually he will only go on the little bit of paper left in his area.  Puppies and dogs have a natural instinct, as with most animals, do not mix where they eat with where they poop, they naturally want to stay clean.  There might even be times where the puppy looks like it knows but then you’re back to square one, that can happen, don’t get discouraged it’s just part of the process.  Remember I said patience.

If your puppy is out of the designated area and you see him start to squat or look like he is about to go, carry him outside or over to the paper, preferably whatever is closest.  You want them to know it’s ok to go on the paper and outside, so praise them for doing the right thing, there is really no need to punish them for doing the wrong thing because they don’t know what that is, just show them the right behavior and reward it.
Tip, if you must go out for an extended period of time and think there is a possibility of an accident confine your puppy to a particular room and leave some paper in the corner or buy a crate and leave some paper in the corner of that.  Just remember how long you can go just, “holding it”, accidents do and will happen throughout the puppy housebreaking process.

Understand this first; please do not expect the training process to be completed until your puppy is at least 6 months old. Puppies are growing and developing very fast and it's normal for a young puppy to be a poop machine.  They are constantly eating and what goes in, well you know. They also have not yet developed bowel and bladder control, so they can't 'hold it' as long as an older dog.  And will usually have to ‘go ‘a half hour after eating which should be around three or four times a day. Keep at the puppy housbreaking is really is not all that difficult.
